Joburg has finally upped its game and welcomed some seriously cool new restaurants to its informal dining scene. From Caribbean tapas to jaw-testing burgers, you can trust me when I say that you’ll want to dig into these new spots.
Brian Lara Rum Eatery
Bursting with exotic plants and playful decor, stepping into the spanking new Brian Lara Rum Eatery is like stepping into a colourful beach bar in Miami! As its name suggests, rum runs freely at this chilled-out eatery, and can be enjoyed in a variety of cocktails … my fave being the creamy-delicious pina colada. On the food side, the menu offers a variety of Caribbean classics, including deep-fried sh cakes, fried corn frittatas and sticky ribs, which are perfect for sharing (the portions are huge!) at a table out on the deck. 56 4th Avenue, Linden, Johannesburg. Bolton Road Collection
It’s a patisserie, a gourmet restaurant and a bar all in one. It’s no wonder the new Bolton Road Collection is already gaining attention from in-the-know foodies! From the fakiest, butteriest croissants and whipped granola bowls to roasted seabass served with cauliflower purée, coconut, charred baby gems and a light and fragrant garam masala sauce, chef Andrew Green has made sure there’s something for everyone. If you’re just stopping by for after- work drinks, be sure to try the Potted Plant cocktail – a delectable mix of rum, drambuie, chocolate liqueur, peppermint crisp and vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate ice … it’s every bit as delicious as it sounds! Corner Jan Smuts Avenue & Bolton Road, Rosebank, Johannesburg. Details: 011 327 6104
Tiger’s Milk
Tiger’s Milk only opened a few weeks ago and is already a hip hive of activity. On the menu are some seriously jaw-testing burgers from no-frills patties like the stepchild, topped with red onion, lettuce and tomato, to exotic options like the triple bypass, stacked high with red onion, lettuce, tomato, a slice of cheese, bacon and truffle-infused mushroom sauce. For pizza lovers, there’s the Asian pulled pork pizza – a crisp crust crowned with acorn- fed pork, Asian spices, hoisin sauce, spring onion, red onion and red pepper. If you’re a chocoholic, be sure to try the Jack Daniels-spiked chocolate … you know how much I love Jack! 300 Bryanston Drive, Bryanston, Johannesburg. Details: 010 286 0105
