5 top Greek restaurants in Cape Town

When I think of Greek food, I think a wine-like sea, whitewashed houses, hot sand and long, lazy lunches of tantalising, comforting and surprisingly healthy Greek food platters. Think tender-fried squid, wispy spanakopita, moussaka lamp chops, chicken pitas, creamy tzatziki – the list goes on! Here are my favourite Greek restaurants in Cape Town that dish up the most delicious Mediterannean fare.

This homely family–run restaurant has been around for quite some time, but has never lost its real taverna atmosphere. On the last Saturday of each month, you can take part in a festive plate-smashing fiesta, complete with Zorba-style dancing. 343 Main Road, Sea Point, Cape Town. Details: 021 439 2106

Located on the famous Camps Bay strip, this stylish spot offers classic Greek dishes, tapas, sushi, and dim sum … a tempting mixture, isn’t it? Marika’s
Laidback and totally unpretentious, this mom-and-dad affair is owned and run by Marika and hubbie, Frank. Dishing up mouth-watering Mediterranean and Greek specialities, all the food here is made with love. Plus, the restaurant offers stunning views of Table Mountain and the harbour from the balcony upstairs. This, paired with the soft sound of Greek music in the background, creates a Greek-island-taverna feel! 176 Vredehoek Avenue, Vredehoek, Cape Town. Details: 021 465 2727
