It’s no doubt that The Maslow Hotel is one of Joburg’s most hip-and-happening hotspots that attracts businesspeople and socialites alike. And the addition of UMAI Sushi at the hotel’s Lacuna Bistro takes the upscale hangout spot to new heights!
Headed up by ex-Nobu chef Eric Manyenkawu, the sushi bar has something for everyone. To start off, we feasted on a spicy salmon salad – melt-in-your-mouth cubes of fresh salmon, avocado and baby marrows on a bed of greens, topped with pickled ginger and a drizzle of sriracha. There’s only one way to describe it: lip-smacking good! Next up, we grabbed our chopsticks and dug into a delectable platter made up of a variety of super-fresh, flavourful sushi rolls – lightly seared tuna and salmon sashimi topped with spring onion, tuna nigiri, tuna maki, prawn California rolls and salmon roses. Artfully plated on green leaves decorated with carrot and ginger shavings, the platter was a feast for both our eyes and our tummies. While each perfectly prepared sushi roll was an absolute delight, our favourite was the salmon roses, rolled with generous slices of salmon and topped with the tastiest, creamiest sushi mayo and caviar. Can you say moreish?
