If you’re looking for somewhere comfortable and relaxed yet utterly lavish to celebrate a special occasion or drink in mesmerising sunsets, look no further than Medeo Restaurant at The Palazzo Hotel.
Medeo Restaurant can be found on the bottom floor of the hotel, where it spills out onto a romantic patio overlooking a closed-off garden that boasts neatly manicured lawns, fragrant blooms and classic cast stone fountains. The high ceilings and large windows of the restaurant lend it great character, while adding to the sense of world-class dining that it exudes.
We choose to sit out on the patio, which truly gives the impression of being far, far away from the hip city streets. Medeo Restaurant keeps things classy with indulgent offerings on the menu, not to mention an excellent wine list that boasts a variety of hand-picked reds, whites and bubbles. Sriracha prawn salad for starters? Here it comes with watermelon gel, feta, avocado and chilli – a perfectly balanced, light and refreshing starter that goes down a treat with a chilled glass of unwooded chardonnay.
From here, we move onto the Puttanesca-style Scottish salmon, served with tomato consommé, semi-dried tomatoes, olives and gremolata. The exceptionally cooked fish dish is a delightful twist on a classic Italian favourite. It’s only rivalled by the grilled sole, served with a rocket salad and caper butter sauce – a light but nonetheless satisfying portion.
For those with a sweet tooth, the vanilla and ginger pana cotta topped with candied popcorn ginger crumbled and served with a side of passion sorbet is a tastebud teaser of note. The passion sorbet alone is enough reason to return time and time again! The Palazzo Hotel Montecasino, Montecasino Boulevard, Fourways, Johannesburg. Details: 011 510 3000
