With the whole city taking measures to follow social distancing and self-isolation, we thought there’s no better time to round up some of the City of Gold’s best takeout and delivery restaurants that let you feast on delicious grub without leaving your couch. Queue up a new series on Netflix and order whatever your heart desires – from fusion sushi and gourmet pizza to Greek street food and more. These takeout and delivery services are available via the individual restaurants’ websites, UberEats, Mr D and more. PS: Remember to tip your driver generously!
Oishi
Oishi is hands down our favourite sushi delivery service in Joburg. They deliver boxes of expertly prepared classic and fusion sushi as well as poké bows and sides via their website and app and UberEats. Our top pick is the Classic 5×5 box – five salmon and avocado Rainbow Roll Reloaded rolls dressed with sweet soya sauce, seven spice, sesame oil and mayo and five Rock Shrimp Tempura rolls – chopped tuna maki rolls wrapped with soya bean paper and topped with tempura shrimp and spicy mayo. Or, try the salmon poké bowl served on sushi rice or baby spinach with edamame, ginger, avocado, carrot and cucumber, topped with nori, spring onion and spicy mayo. Whatever you order, it’s guaranteed to be Insta-worthy enough for staying in stylishly!
Urban Braza
It’s easy to miss Urban Braza when driving down 4th Avenue in Parkhurst but trust us – this humble little pizza takeaway joint makes some of the best pizzas in Joburg. Available as a takeout or via UberEats and Mr D, their menu covers everything from the simple to the gourmet. If you’re a plain Jane, try the margarita or La Regina. Feeling fancy? We recommend vegetarian Forest Walk pizza topped with capers, mozzarella, mushrooms, olives and artichokes, or the signature Urban Braza – peri-peri chicken, red onion, galega, olives, garlic and Italian parsley. All pizzas are made on a premium ‘00’ pizza dough base or gluten-free base with your choice of homemade tomato sauce and imported mozzarella, therefore vegan options are available.
Soul Souvlaki
Soul Souvlaki makes the most impeccable Greek street food, and with branches in Bedfordview, Craighall, Dowerglen, Parktown North, Rand Stream Tower and Rosebank, you’re bound to find one near you. Go past and pick up takeouts or order via UberEats – whatever you do, you must try one of their famous ‘in the hand’ souvlakis. Meat eaters will love the lamb or chicken in pita, while veggies will adore the grilled halloumi or grilled giant mushroom (PS: it’s vegan!) in pita. All souvlakis are rolled in a warm pita with your choice of tzatziki, crisp rocket, red onion, tomato and fresh chilli. The restaurant also serves main meals ‘on a plate’ plus meze including chicken chops, lamb sticks, grilled bifteki and grilled chilli feta as well as a variety of dips to go with their freshly baked pita bread.
Thai Café
Thai Café makes healthy eating easy with their authentic Thai flavours and recipes. Unfortunately this Cape Town chain only has one Joburg restaurant and that’s in Greenside, but if you do live in and around the area, you’re in for a treat! We suggest going all out and ordering a Thai feast for a big night in. For starters, go for the crispy wontons filled with minced chicken, the chicken satay skewers served with their special peanut sauce and the deep-fried tempura prawns. For mains, our all-time favourite is the Ba Me Prik Phao chef’s special: Your choice of tofu, chicken, beef, pork, or prawns stir-fried with yellow egg noodles, fresh vegetables and cashews in roasted chilli paste. The restaurant also offers a big selection of salads, curries and stir-fries and delivers directly or via UberEats and Mr D.
The Prawnery Bistro & Bar
Local Illovo eatery, The Prawnery Bistro & Bar has started serving a sumptuous special menu for takeout and delivery or quick eat-ins. There are so many dishes we recommend here, but we’ll try and narrow it down. The meze or ‘nibbles’ are a great choice if you’d like to sample a bit of everything, from lightly battered rock shrimp in a spicy mayo, to the steamed soft-shell crab with wasabi mayo and soy sauce. And did we mention the Swedish Skagen made with prawns in a mix of sour cream, dill, lettuce and red onion served cold on toast? For mains, prawns are of course the star of the show and come in all sizes, but on a cold Joburg night we highly recommend opting for the comforting prawn and scallop pasta.
