The government has made it clear that restaurants, bars, cafés and all the rest are very much off limits for the moment. But just because you’re spending time indoors doesn’t mean you can’t immerse yourself in the best food, drink and culture that Joburg has to offer. We know all we usually do is bang on about how great it is to go out, but now we’re going to help bring a little bit of Jozi to your living room.
Innovative ways local eateries are making their offerings available
Brik Café: Ingredient boxes are available from the conscious café in the Firestation building in Rosebank to keep you fed and healthy. Take your pick from a vegan box (including Almond Creamery almond milk, vegan chocolate chip cookies and vegan Greek feta), vegetarian box (including homemade yoghurt, grain-free granola and ready-to-eat dhal), gluten-free box (including date and walnut gluten-free bread, homemade seasonal preserve and ready-to-eat pulled beef brisket) and the Brik Box (including a 1L Moordrift full cream milk sachet, sourdough bread and coconut macaroons). PS: 10% of box sales goes to the waiters!
How to order: WhatsApp 071 509 3131, email firstname.lastname@example.org or DM Brik Café on Instagram
Publik Wine Bar: This tiny wine bar on Park Corner in Parkwood is now trading mostly as a deli and offering takeaway bread (sourdough and ciabatta), cheeses, olives, anchovies and charcuterie boards as well as meals of meatballs, cannelloni and bao. They also have fresh fruit and vegetables available by the box – but take note that only five boxes are available daily so pre-ordering is encouraged. The best news is that you can still order their boutique wines from their online platform, have them delivered to the bar and pick them up with your bi-weekly haul!
How to order: For deli orders, call ahead on 073 899 4816 so that they get your order ready (it will be wax-wrapped or packed up for takeaway) or for wine orders, visit www.publik.co.za
DW Eleven-13: Chef Marthinus Ferreira is bringing the fine dining fare that his popular restaurant in Dunkeld West is known for to the comfort of your home. The roast chicken and lamb shoulder are both accompanied by potatoes, confit beets, carrots and gravy, and are made to serve four people. There’s also pumpkin soup with homemade bread, which makes for a great starter for your meal. Pre-orders are essential – the restaurant needs at least 24 hours’ notice and you’ll need to collect your order from the restaurant. A delivery service is said to be coming soon.
