Living in Joburg can be tough on your skin with all the pollution and air-conditioned offices. That’s before we even think about dehydration, harsh weather, alcohol, sun exposure and the inevitable passing of time (eek!). Just thinking about what we put our skin through is enough to give you frown lines! Luckily, at the newly opened Sorbet SK-N in Hyde Park Corner, you can get a relaxing, soothing facial massage, some instant radiance, a total skincare overhaul or something a little more intense.
The chic salon boasts understated grey and dusty pink interiors and state-of-the-art treatment rooms and skin technology. There are many skin treatments to pick from for both women and men, but I settled on the Ultra-Hydrating Microdermabrasion (AKA the Silk Peel) with an Exuviance Facial to try and reverse the effects that winter had on my skin this year. The Silk Peel is a resurfacing treatment that combines exfoliation, extraction and infusion all in one step and uses a diamond-tipped wand (yes, you read right) that non-invasively exfoliates the skin. While exfoliating, it also vacuums up debris and infuses the skin with a serum by means of pneumatic pressure.
The serum used on me was the Ultra-Hydrating serum (there’s also a Brightening, Pore Clarifying and Vitamin C serum for you to choose from) to help hydrate my skin, eyelids and lips. After the Silk Peel, all excess product left on my skin was wiped up and a Plump Perfect Firming Mask was then applied to help restore lost volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. After just 10 minutes, the mask was removed, and a collagen-boosting serum was then applied to keep my skin looking young and vibrant. This was followed up by an eye contour cream and another restorative cream that restores dry, photo-damaged skin.
The Silk Peel was slightly uncomfortable, but not at all painful. My therapist, Elsabe, was tremendously hands-on and talked me through the entire treatment. What I love about it the most is that it has no downtime depending on your skin sensitivity (I have very sensitive skin and my skin was perfectly fine afterwards) and you can do the treatment every four to six weeks.

If you’re a new client, a full set of classic lashes will cost you and R850 and volume will cost R990. After your first visit, the price goes down to R700 for classic and R850 for volume.

Next, pop into Glow Couture Fourways for the best spray tan in Joburg. The intimate spray tanning studio decorated in turquoise and gold uses their own organic, vegan, paraben-free and animal-friendly spray tan solution that comes in seven different colours and owner Jen will make sure you feel as comfortable as possible while she guides you through the movements. A normal spray tan costs R380 (or R410 for guys) with the option of a setting powder applied on top of your tan for an extra R120. The setting powder is the best thing ever – mattifying with a subtle glitter, it makes your tan feel dry and comfortable instantly.
