The best products to shield icy blonde strands from damage and dullness

The world may never really know if blondes have more fun. But as a bottle blonde myself, I’ll be the first to tell you that it’s all fun and games – until you use the wrong haircare products. Using the wrong shampoo and conditioner just once can result in your colour being washed down the drain after spending hours in the salon. Yup, it’s happened to me before. But that’s where my two latest hair care obsessions come in: John Frieda Sheer Blonde Colour Renew and the Sheer Blonde Hi-Impact range. Whether you’re born with it or bottle, these products are perfect for natural and not-so-natural blondes. Brassiness is officially cancelled!

My personal hair concerns

My hair is thick and long (almost halfway down my back) and my regular hair care routine includes using a shampoo and conditioner two to three times a week, a hair mask once a week, a purple shampoo once a week and heat protectant products before styling. As for my styling routine, I blow dry and straighten my hair after every wash and sometimes add curls with a curling wand as well.

My natural colour is light brown, but my current colour is light blonde – I’ve been highlighting my hair light blonde every six weeks for many years. So, as you can imagine, my hair is rather damaged, and I have to use products specifically for blonde hair to revive it when it starts looking dull. Fortunately, frizz and a lack of volume aren’t concerns of mine.

The John Frieda Sheer Blonde products I just mentioned above have helped me so much to overcome my two biggest hair concerns – damaged, dull locks. Here’s what they’re about, how they worked for me and where you can purchase them to try them out for yourself.

John Frieda Sheer Blonde Colour Renew Shampooo

What it is: John Frieda’s Sheer Blonde Colour Renew Tone-Correcting Shampoo is a purple shampoo for salon-fresh style. It contains ground-breaking colour-correcting technology to revitalise and rebalance blonde in just three washes. Optical brightening technology absorbs UV light and emits a white-blue glow so colour-treated blonde tones appear brighter. It’s suitable for all shades of colour-treated or highlighted blonde hair.

How it worked for me: In my opinion, this purple shampoo is the easiest way to keep your hue looking icy. I think of it like a weekly tune-up for my dye job. Cool, right? Over the years, I’ve tried many (mostly high-end) purple shampoos and the problem I’ve found with most of them is that they cause your hair to have a purple tint to it. However, this isn’t the case with this product. After just three washes, I was able to notice a difference in the colour right away, but it wasn’t at all ashy. Another bonus is that this product doesn’t dry my hair out like many others I’ve tried, so I can use it up to three times a week. I simply love it! If you’re someone who has the constant struggle of unwanted brassy tones in your coloured or highlighted hair, this is a product you can’t pass up – especially not at such an affordable price.

John Frieda Hi-Impact Vibrancy Restoring Shampoo & Conditioner

What it is: John Frieda’s Sheer Blonde Hi-Impact Vibrancy Restoring Shampoo & Conditioner duo gives over-processed strands new life. Formulated specifically for blonde hair, it restores healthy, vivid hues and rejuvenates and restores vibrancy to distressed hair. It’s all you need to cleanse your way to better blonde and is totally safe for colour-treated hair.

How it worked for me: Up until I was introduced to this shampoo and conditioner, I didn’t really have a ‘go-to’ shampoo and conditioner in my everyday routine – I was bouncing back and forth between a few different salon brands that I won’t mention here. I’ve always found that chemical-laden big-name haircare products tend to strip my hair of its colour, making it look and feel even more damaged than it actually is. Now, whenever anyone asks me for a shampoo and recommendation for blonde hair, I tell them about John Frieda Sheer Blonde Hi-Impact. It doesn’t matter what your hair type is – thick or fine, frizzy or straight – this duo will maintain the shine and sleekness. As a plus, these products have given my hair some extra volume … and they smell divine! Overall, the condition of my hair looks 100% better and I’m beyond impressed with the results.

John Frieda Sheer Blonde Hi-Impact Vibrancy Restoring Deep Conditioner

What it is: John Frieda’s Sheer Blonde Hi-Impact Vibrancy Restoring Deep Conditioner gives blonde hair a radiant glow. This restoring deep conditioner intensely nourishes and strengthens strands for boosted texture and vibrant shine. Say goodbye to dry, brittle hair and bring back blonde that’s as bold as ever! It’s safe for colour-treated hair.

How it worked for me: I started using this deep conditioner a few days after I had my hair highlighted as it was feeling very brittle and dry. I’ll admit that at first, I was a bit skeptical as I’ve tried many different deep conditioners before and I’m not a fan of how they usually leave my hair feeling weighed down. To my surprise, I was truly wowed by this product! I’ve been using it weekly ever since, as it leaves my hair feeling silky-soft and smooth, making it more manageable when styling too. I’ve never been a ‘blow and go’ kind of girl, but this product tames my hair so much that I’m actually confident enough to leave the house without straightening or curling it after blow drying. As a bonus, it smells delicious just like the shampoo and conditioner. Dare I say that this deep conditioner is on par with many high-end pre-washes and deep conditioners.

John Frieda Sheer Blonde Hi-Impact Vibrancy Restoring Oil Elixir

What it is: John Frieda’s Sheer Blonde Hi-Impact Vibrancy Restoring Oil Elixir specifically for blonde hair replenishes over-processed, dull hair and visibly repairs damage to reveal shiny, shimmering locks. All you need is a few drops of this hair-restoring treatment to help add lustre to processed strands for a new, revived shine.

How it worked for me: I don’t like cutting my hair too often as I like to grow it and keep it long, and this hair oil is perfect for that. Before I started using it, my hair was dry and I had split ends, but my hair is now softer and brighter and looks less damaged from the mid-lengths to ends. The best part is that this hair oil doesn’t leave my hair greasy at all – at first, it does appear to make your hair look a bit oily, but as it sinks in, it vanishes and leaves you with smooth, shiny locks. It’s definitely diminished the appearance of split ends, which we all know blondes get a lot. You can use it before blow drying as it works as a heat protectant as well as after blow drying to tame frayed tips for an instant smooth style. Three pumps is generally enough for my hair (and I have long hair), so it will last a while too!
