THE IVY Villa Hotel & Spa: The cream of the crop for canoodling in the City of Gold

When plotting the perfect romantic getaway, you’d struggle to do better than a weekend at THE IVY Villa Hotel & Spa. Here, they’ll bend over backwards to make your stay as passionate as possible. And better yet, they not only welcome four-legged guests but make them feel as special as the rest of the pack too. This gorgeous lodging has it all for an extra special stay.

Located in the quiet area of Strathavon, just a stone’s throw from Sandton City Shopping Centre and Nelson Mandela Square, THE IVY Villa Hotel & Spa has all the advantages of being located in Sandton (without its inconveniences).

As you pull up to the entrance of this inner-city sanctuary, you’re greeted by the two boisterous resident Great Danes, Gigi and Duke. This hotel knows that the thought of travelling without Benji can make many put the kibosh on an entire trip, so they’ve gone all out to make the space pet-friendly. They even have welcome packs for your furry friends – but what else can you expect from a hotel that’s obsessed with pets? After checking in, you’re taken through to Poison Ivy cognac, champagne and cigar lounge to enjoy a welcome drink. The upmarket lounge is an experience fit for aficionados to relax in style and makes a seriously good citrus and rosemary G&T garnished with rose petals.

One of the staff will then chauffeur you to your room on a golf cart. The hotel has a selection of different rooms available, however, we recommend booking a ground-floor villa suite which will seduce you with its chic monochrome style. Overlooking the gardens and a stream, each elegant villa boasts a large balcony with a jacuzzi and a tranquil view. Inside, there’s an extra-length king-sized bed, blackout curtains, a seating area, custom-designed furnishings and a deep soaking tub. Never flashy, always discreet and luxurious, the rooms play upon dark, moody tones. The modern furniture come together in perfect harmony with ravishing fabrics. You’ll feel far from the hustle and bustle of the city, in absolute calm.

Of course, all the amenities you’d expect from a five-star hotel are included – think a 65-inch smart TV, full bouquet of DStv, bathroom with double vanities, full access to the 24-hour gym and heated lap pool as well as the option of in-room dining with full butler service.

The hotel is also home to Reuben’s Restaurant & Bar, where we recommend you book for dinner. Looking out onto lush green gardens, this restaurant by South African celebrity chef Reuben Riffel offers an extensive bistro-style menu and a wide selection of wines to enhance your food. We recommend starting with the prawn tempura with avocado, fragrant herb salad, lime aioli, tomato nam jim and a spicy lemon dressing followed by the crisp pork belly with black pepper caramel, pommes puree, kimchi fried cabbage and beetroot for mains. For dessert, you simply must try the dark chocolate terrine with orange caramel and hazelnut ice cream.

No visit here would be complete with a proper pampering at Camelot Spa. Enveloped in stone textures blended with splashes of therapeutic tones of gold, navy blue and grey, this is a spa that can cater to your every demand. The facilities include a Rasul, outdoor pool, manicure and pedicure lounge as well as four treatment rooms, of which three are double and perfect for couples. For guaranteed rejuvenation, we advise booking a 60-minute aromatherapy massage for you and that someone special. This massage promotes healing, well-being and relaxation using pure essential oils and light massage strokes.

To encourage your love to reach full bloom, it’s important to pick a hotel with the right kind of vibe. Whether you’re a new couple planning your first weekend staycation or long-term partners who fancy a little escapism, THE IVY Villa Hotel & Spa is one of the best places to be loved up!
